code geass is underrated for so many reasons but i just wanna say it’s INSANE that there aren’t more people pointing out how good the fucking score soundtrack is. not just the ops and eds!!! genuinely nakagawa should have been given fifty bajillion awards for the shit he cooked for the backing tracks because they add so so so much to the series. stream eternal seperation and zero
#code geass#when i say cg is underrated im not saying that no one likes/talks about it#it was one of the most popular animes in the late 00s#and has had like 50 spinoff and the like#no what im saying is i think code geass is the best anime of all time#and im not even joking a little bit#the fact that it isnt considered essential watching anymore is a crime to me#honestly#it might actually be up there as one of this millenia’s best pieces of television so rar#anyways that soundtrack always makes me cry#code geass: lelouch of the rebellion#lelouch vi britannia#lelouch lamperouge#suzaku kururugi

Will we ever get anything quite like Code Geass again?
I don't think it's possible.
Code Geass is Japanese nationalist propaganda disguised as a global political drama, disguised as a military mecha show, disguised as yaoibait, disguised as a teen melodrama, disguised as a high school romcom, disguised as a Pizza Hut commercial...
...except those layers aren't layers at all, but are instead comingled in a giant snake ball of insanity.
The lead writer, Ichirō Ōkouchi, only ever worked as an episode writer for other shows prior to Code Geass, and never took the helm of an anime series ever again. And it shows. [EDIT: Several people have pointed out his other lead writing credits to me. So I misread Wikipedia—sue me. I maintain that this guy is a better episode writer than he is a lead writer.]
The minute-to-minute pacing is impeccable from a mechanical standpoint, with tension and stakes rising to ever-higher peaks, balanced out by the slow simmers of the b-plot and c-plot. It keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat at all times. Meanwhile, the large-scale plot is the most off-the-wall middle school nonsense I've ever seen, continually surprising the viewer by pulling twists too dumb to have ever have been on their radar—and therefore more effective in terms of raw shock value.
"Greenlight it!" was the mantra of this anime's production. It must have been. It has, in no particular order, all of the following:
Character designs from CLAMP, the foremost yaoi/BL group in Japan at the time—for characters who are only queer insofar as they can bait the audience, and only straight insofar as they can be more misogynist to the female cast.
Speaking of the female cast, hoo boy the fanservice. We've all seen anime girls breast boobily, with many cases more egregious than Code Geass, but there's something special about it happening immediately after—or sometimes in the middle of!—scenes of military conflict and ethnic cleansing.
Pizza Hut product placement everywhere, in every conceivable situation. High-speed chases, light slice-of-life scenes, intimate character moments, all of it. Gotta have Pizza Hut.
The anime-only Pizza Hut mascot, Cheese-kun. He wears a fedora.
The most hilarious approximations of European names—which I would love to see more often, frankly. Names like, I dunno, "Count Schnitzelgrübe zi Blanquezzio."
A depiction of China that is wholly removed from any modern reality, with red-and-gold pagodas, ornamental robes, scheming eunuchs, and a brainwashed child empress. There's a character named General Tsao, like the chicken.
Inappropriate free-form jazz in the soundtrack, intruding at the most unexpected times.
A secret cabal not unlike the Illuminati, run by an immortal shota with magic powers, holding influence all across the world, at the highest levels of government. They matter for approximately three episodes.
An unexpected insert scene of a schoolgirl using the corner of a table to masturbate. She's doing it to thoughts of her crush, the princess Euphemia—because she believes Euphemia to be as racist as she herself is, and that gets her off. This interrupts an unrelated scene of our protagonist faction planning their next move, which then resumes as if uninterrupted.
Said schoolgirl, in a fit of hysteria, threatens to detonate a worse-than-nuclear bomb in the middle of her school. She then goes on to develop an even more destructive version of that bomb, and become a war criminal, in a chain of cause-and-effect stemming from the moment she finds out that Euphemia wasn't actually that racist.
A character called "the Earl of Pudding."
A premise that asks us to believe that the name Lelouch is normal enough that he didn't need to change it when he went into hiding as an ordinary civilian. "No, that's not Prince Strimbleford von Vanquish! That's our classmate, Strimbleford Smith."
The collective unconscious, a la Carl Jung, within which the protagonist fights his villainous father for control over the fate of humankind. After this is over, the anime just keeps going for about ten more episodes.
An episode in which a mech tosses a giant pizza.
A gay yandere sleeper agent who can manipulate the perception of time.
Chess being played very badly, even to the untrained eye. Lelouch frequently checkmates his opponent by moving his king. This goes hand-in-hand with the anime's crock of bad chess symbolism.
A fictional drug that can most succinctly be described as "nostalgia heroin."
Roller-skating mecha in knightly armor, and some of the most sickass mecha fight choreography that I've seen.
I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture. This anime is what the average Westerner in 2006 thought anime was, and it was made in a confluence of factors that cannot be replicated. I've never had so much fun watching something that I found so... insulting. Repugnant. Ridiculous. Baffling. I love it sincerely.
Catch me cosplaying Lloyd Asplund at a con sometime, or maybe even the big gay loser himself, Lelouch vi Britannia.

Small analysis of "Nunnally"
youtube
Today I bring you one of my favorite instrumental pieces from the Code Geass soundtrack: Nunnally's theme. And, by the way, I'll give you a little analysis about it. I was going to hold out until I analyzed Lelouch and Kallen's kiss scene, but whatever. So here is a preview of that analysis.
I think Nunnally's theme is the love theme of the series. Why? Because the series associated Nunnally with love in episode 11 of R2, "The Power of the Passions." At that time a conversation takes place between Lelouch and Shirley about love. The orange-haired girl claims that love is a powerful force that moves people to do anything, from the stupidest to the impossible, and she lists several examples to support her premise. Lelouch is convinced by her argument, when he realizes that his love for Nunnally has filled him with power. Therefore, Nunnally is the first person that Lelouch professed sincere and enormous love for, and therefore, Nunnally represents love from Lelouch's point of view.
An example of this is in episode 24 when Nina and Lelouch speak for the last time. Why does it ring at that moment? Because they are both talking about Euphemia. Nina is helping her worst enemy out of love for Euphy, both to see the princess' wish of a world where everyone is happy come true and to give justice to her murder since Lelouch intends to pay for his crime with the Zero Requiem. Don't forget that Euphemia is the reason Nina is fighting.
The music doesn't stop at that point and extends until the last conversation between Lelouch and C.C. Why? Because C.C. feels remorse for giving Geass to Lelouch. Geass changed his entire life and now he has to face the person he has loved most in his life, his own sister, and give his life for humanity and to pay for his sins. He has thousands of reasons to hate her. She used him, betrayed him, and lied to him for almost the entire series. But Lelouch has forgiven her everything because the witch has become an important person to him. In addition to that Lelouch takes full responsibility for having used the cursed gift she gave him and, rather, thanks her. It's a perfect display of love and this is what will motivate C.C. to live in the new world.
Above all, this theme is especially remembered because it was played when Lelouch and Kallen kiss and it is coincidentally the first time it is heard in the entire series. A few moments before, Kallen asks Lelouch what she meant to him and why he said "Kallen, you have to live" in front of the firing squad, to which Lelouch remains silent and Kallen acts by planting a kiss on him that Lelouch does not hesitate to accept. give the girl back. Kallen doesn't get an answer from her, but the music fills the void that Lelouch's silence leaves. Lelouch loved Kallen.
Why don't I say it's a "romance" theme? I'm just being cautious and avoid making strong statements. Fanboys hate my interpretation of Nunnally's theme since it implies that Lelouch reciprocates Kallen's feelings. Even if they like the idea that it's a romance theme given that it plays during the conversation between Lelouch and C.C., they can't deny that it also played at the RIGHT moment Lelouch and Kallen kissed, RIGHT after she wants to clarify with him the nature of their relationship (and much more strongly).
You be the judges. Music is another element of the composition and, like any element in an audiovisual product, it has an intention.

@darkcrowprincess I remembered other monster girls actually but the media gets really niche so be warned.
1: like half the bitches from Homestuck. That being said it's Homestuck so RUN RUN DON'T DO IT YOU WILL NEVER GET THE GREY BODY PAINT STAINS OUT OF ANYTHING DON'T DO IT!!!
2: Adventure Time has quite a few non human very flawed women. Also a bunch of other shit. Also lesbians 👌🏼🔥
3: Steven Universe (if you consider gem aliens monsters? I'm trans and willing to cosplay Pearl cuz I consider all the gems on the NB spectrum soooo) Lotta bad and great women shaped people in that show. Would recommend (plus the music is very fun) also lesbians
4: Beastars (if you consider furries monsters? I cosplayed Haru one time, so I do personally.) Not very women lead but the Manga has some more fem centric story lines, and the show it's has a lot to say about what we consider "monsterus" (lesbian coded in the manga)
5. Like any DND podcast. My favorites come from Dimension 20. Fantasy High got me into DND, and I would highly recommend it! Fig Faeth lives in my head rent-free. (There are indeed lesbians)
6. Vivziverse DONT DO IT DON'T DO IT THE BODY PAINT AHHHHHHH (But the soundtracks bomb. Charlie Morningstar lives in my head rent-free) (I'm sensing a theme in my monster girl related media...)
7. My Baby Sitter's a Vampire (I warned you it got niche). This fandom is really fun, but the story will disappoint you because it ends on a cliffhanger and they will probably never finish it 🙃 but it's a lot of fun. Not lesbians but I headcannon it... not them... well...
8. Athena from Croakerverse? (If being the vessel for the soul of Gerard Way is considered "monsterus, "... I wouldn't cosplay her (I would cosplay Sage, though)) This entry is literally a series of Tumbler blogs. Would recommend Strange Eons video recap on it, buck wild, still ongoing.
9. Poppy's discography (if being... whatever Poppy is is monstrous... yeah I'd cosplay her... not well) She's just very good. (Also Sapphic vibes. Her cover of All the things She said ;-;)
10. Monika from Doki Doki Litterature Club (if being a sentient AI is monstrous... the way she does it probably... I would slay that costume) MAJOR TRIGGER WARNING on that one but genuinely such a good game, . (I refuse to belive this game isn't sapphic)
All the other monsturus women I remember are probably from Anime, so quickly:
KRULE TEPIST MY GOAT from Owari No Seraph (OMG THIS FUCKING SHOW *Screams incoherently in never getting season 3*)
Monster Musume (This show is... highly questionable, but I remember enjoying it way back when. Lotta monster girls... highly questionable)
C2 From Code Gayass Geass. She's a witch? Vibes but I recommend the show because the show is great.
Black Butler has a couple monster ladies but Grell Sutcliffe is my Grim Reaper trans fem wife and I will hear no slander of her name.
My Hero Academia also has girls with monster stuff going on but it's less monsters and more mutations— omg me forgetting X-Men exists (haven't seen more then the first 2 Deadpools but my brother highly recommends)
Attack on Titan (haven't finished it) and I can't tell you who the monster girl is cuz spoilers but you will probably cry so have tissues handy.
Aggretsuko if being a furry is indeed a monsturus. This one's really cute and women lead. This red panda is SO DONE with working 9-5, and she screams about it. Peak fiction, much a mood👌🏼
If you're screaming a very popular show at me rn, please scream louder. I need recs.
If more monsturus Ladies hit me I'll let you know but for now this is all I've got *-* I've failed the name 100 women challenge and for that, I'll go find more women... I do have monster boys as well, but save it for another day. ... oh, Homestuck also has Lesbians in case anyone was wondering.
#monster fucker#monster lover#maybe the monster was me all along#i will go fuck and love myself now <3#fucking love myself*#yeah totally ment that

Every anime season I have one or two shows from past seasons that are all done to hold me over while the week passes and this time I've somehow managed to stumble onto Aldnoah Zero which feels like the best mix of Code Geass and Eighty-Six I could have ever hoped for.
My favorite aspect so far is definitely the soundtrack but tell me why I haven't even seen Inaho and Slaine interact yet but I can't stop myself searching for doujins and fanart?!? They look like they'd make the cutest pair and I just can't wait to continue this shit 😭🔥

Been rewatching Code Geass with my partner after having not watched it since I was in the fifth grade.
It's been wild seeing the show through the eyes of an adult and trying to explain it to him (who's not into anime AT ALL)
His questions so far;
1. Aren't these high schoolers? Why do we see them naked so much? (Anime)
2. Why does the soundtrack sound like it's from a detective noir? (No clue, but I kinda love it)
3. So, do those two guys get together at the end? (HAHAHA 😭)
4. What do you mean there used to be pizza hut advertising all over it? (They were removed in the Hulu version, but I swear it was there)
And my personal favorite,
5. Who's the good guy in this show? (No one. They're all bastards)
#we're barely even in#i cant wait to try and explain the table scene#code geass#lelouch is such a little prick#but i cant help but have a soft spot for the bastard
